ZPC-GX31 - The All In One Keyboard!

This one reminds me of the old Commodore 64 and 128 days when the CPU and all the core functions of the home computer used to be inside the keyboard itself. This one takes up very little desktop space and actually packs quite a punch with its Core 2 Quad processor. Still, it lacts a good 3d card but for that, provides a PCI-Express expansion slot if the need arises. I am not too impressed with the Realtek audio either, but I guess this was not supposed to be an enthusiast machine in the first place. Looks like the way ahead is to go retro!

Xbox 360 Elite and 120GB drive now official

HD nerds and Xbox fanboys, the moment you've been waiting for: the Xbox 360 Elite we alerted you about way back when it was just called the Zephyr has finally been announced. As we previously mentioned, it will be black, it will have HDMI, and it will have a 120GB drive (it'll also come bundled with a one month Xbox Live trial) for $479. Unfortunately, also as mentioned before, it's not going to have the new 65nm CPUs, it still doesn't have integrated WiFi (Xbox said it's because a study showed the majority of their customers use Ethernet to connect -- huh?), and it won't have an integrated HD DVD drive (not that we expected otherwise). Microsoft did make some marketing decisions since our sources spilled the beans on this thing though: it's not going to be limited edition, as we previously had. Instead, the Elite will be a permanent SKU, the third and top-tier Xbox device. On the solo 120GB drive side of things, that unit will cost $179, and will come with a cable and software to migrate from your old 20GB drive. (MSFT wasn't yet sure if that kit would be sold separately for new Elite users -- sounds like it will be though, and will be priced very reasonably.) More info:

  • The console will come with component and composite cables, as well as an HDMI cable. (Take that, Sony and Apple!)
  • The console will come with a black wireless controller and black (wired) headset.
  • Sorry, the new black controller still doesn't have backlit buttons -- don't let the pic fool you.
  • The black controller, black rechargeable batteries, black headset, and black Play & Charge kit will all be available in retail for the same price as the white gear.
  • The HD DVD drive will not be released in black.
  • Xbox didn't know what HDMI version the Elite uses, nor whether it supports PCM 5.1, TrueHD, etc.; it will obviously support 1080p, though.
  • Sorry, no price cuts on the Premium or Core packs.
  • Xbox Live Marketplace will also begin vending content from New Line, Paramount, and Universal (and their properties).

Samsung pushes the HD quality envelope with new camcorder

Today at CES Samsung announced a new high definition flash camcorder, the SC-HMX20 ($999 MSRP).It has a 6.4-megapixel CMOS sensor that also has a stunning 8-megapixel still camera capability. It can also shoot what’s called super slow motion at 300 frames per second. Wow. That’s enough to help me with my golf swing or those overdue balloon bursting physics experiments for school.

The SC-HMX10 had an unconventional swivel grip design and touch screen LCD, the first manufacturer to rival Sony’s interface of choice, features continued on the new C-HMX20.
An SDHC/MMC card slot is built in to increase recording time. Samsung has implemented a 300fps slow motion feature that allows true slow motion capture of up to 10 seconds. This feature strikes a similarity towards Sony’s Smooth Slow Record function, which records three seconds of footage at 240fps. The SC-HMX20 has a 2.7-inch wide touch screen LCD display, another familiar Sony standard. The SC-HMX20 is PictBridge compatible and features Component, S-Video, Composite, and HDMI outputs.

The Play Station 3, for instance, has a graphic processor named as “RSX”. The device provides an environment that is interactive as well as impressive and offer experiences that never could have been imagined before.

The gaming consoles generate certain images and sounds and display them on a screen that is supported by an audio-video system such as that of a television. The hand held ones are small devices, wherein the speaker and the display are fitted together. One of my friend has been using a gaming console for a few months now. He finds it very entertaining and hassle free to use. He can carry it almost everywhere and never miss out on a chance of playing some of the best games. The latest game consoles have excellent battery support and that allows the user to play for long hours. The memory is also kept large so that the user can store a number of games. The screen is generally large and delivers graphics with a high resolution so that every icon becomes visible while playing. The whole affair becomes exciting and screen resolution soothes one’s eyes too.

HTC Touch Diamond

The HTC Touch Diamond—iPhone Killer or just another Windows Mobile device? It kinda reminds me of a mini-iPhone. A couple of nice design features: the animated weather display (you can have up to six places' weather forecast bookmarked) makes me think of the widget on my MacBook; the click-wheel in miniature that lets you zoom in on the screen; and there's a very nifty little feature that automatically switches the phone onto silent mode when you lie it on its front. UI was much more attractive than I was expecting, but the touchscreen takes quite a bit of getting used to: it's sluggish to the touch, compared to the hot-butterish iPhone, but the HTC rep assured me that it's not a final version of the software, and everything should have been ironed out by the time of the European and Asian launches next month.

The HTC Touch Diamond specs are pretty similar and include:
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • Qualcomm MSM 7201A @ 528MHz
  • 256MB ROM / 128MB RAM
  • 7.2MB HSDPA / HSUPA (rev A EVDO for Sprint versions)
  • 2.8″ VGA screen
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR
  • eGPS
  • 3.1MP Camera with flash
  • Front camera for video calls
  • 4GB internal flash storage
  • Accelerometer
  • FM Radio
  • microSD expansion
  • 900mAh battery
  • Dimensions:
  • Diamond: 51×99x10.7mm

The main difference between HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro is the side slide QWERTY keyboard on the latter handset.

One interesting thing about both smartphones it’s their apparently pretty small 900 mAh battery, which seems strange coupled with more power hungry VGA displays. Especially compared with 1350 mAh battery in HTC Touch Cruise. We’ll have to see what tricks HTC has come up to give the new phones an acceptable endurance.

ASUS Aura iPhone Look-alike

While not widely acknowledged, introduction of Apple iPhone seems to have sent a shockwave throughout cellphone industry and left major vendors scrambling to produce their own answer to it. Only LG seems to have had something at least a little bit similar to iPhone with their LG Prada KE850 phone. Other vendors were left churning out the concept phones on YouTube. And here’s another concept phone - Asus Aura, produced by Hungarian design company Egy Studio for Taiwanese vendor. It was clearly inspired by iPhone, although it has some interesting innovations addressing commonly mentioned shortcomings of Apple’s cellphone.
One of them is a movable navigation module with navigation buttons, another - a sliding QWERTY keyboard that should make text entry much easier. Other features of Asus Aura include - 3,9″ touchscreen covering the whole surface of the phone, 2 megapixel camera, microSD memory card slot, GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. All of this in a 6mm thick package.
Unfortunately Asus Aura is just a concept so far and will stay that way probably a few years. With the dimensions of 97×49x6mm and total volume of 28 cc, Asus aura is several times smaller then what current HSDPA chipsets allow to be. But with Moore’s law and competition among communication chip makers in full swing, who knows? We might see it sooner.

Samsung Glyde

After seeing pictures of the Samsung Glyde, I believe that we have seen just about everything that can be done with cell phones. It appears that the new industry standard could be a touchscreen along with a QWERTY keyboard. Obviously some new iPhone-ish type of gadget has to come out in order to really revolutionize the mobile phone market any further.

Until then, there is the Glyde. The Glyde is surfing the present industry standard with its touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. The Glyde, whose official name is the Samsung SCH-U940, has some other very interesting features. Not only does it have a GPS, but there is a full HTML browser as well as V CAST Muisc and Video.

Then, of course, there are the usual bells and whistles such as Bluetooth connectivity, a microSD, and a 2 Megapixel camera with Camcorder for 30-second MMS clips as well as 10 minute normal length clips.

Sadly, some gadget blogs have already downplayed the Glyde, comparing it to the iPhone and LG Voyager, and found it wanting. Rumor has it that the Glyde is due for a May 9th release date, and should be available from Verizon for $249 with a two year contract.

Fingerprint Authentication Mouse Locks Files With Biometrics

Truth be told, I have an assortment of files on my computer I’d rather not have other people look at. Whether it be secretive outlines for future blog posts or confidential paper work and conversations, there are just some pieces of data I’d rather not have viewed by any nosy desktop hunters.

While there are plenty of ways to hide the files behind a wall of security features, such as marking files as hidden or developing a password system, the only method some people feel secure with is the use of biometrics. The Sequiam Biometrics ScanQ Fingerprint Authentication Scanner and Software is made especially for securing your personal files which need a little extra privacy.

The scanner, which is compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista, comes stocked with a collection of biometric security features, such as securty authentication for opening and using specific files, logging into Windows, and an assortment of other security measures. The fingerprint scanner is built right into a mouse for easy space integration.

Aside from biometric security, the USB-powered ScanQ offers two security options. One is using only your fingerprint, and an option for ultra secure files which enables both a fingerprint scan and a password in order to access the file.

For $70, the Sequiam Biometrics ScanQ Fingerprint Authentication Scanner is a pretty nice value for the added security and peace of mind it offers if you have files which need to be held under lock and key.

Verizon Wireless makes Moto Q9c available

Verizon Wireless seems to be on a warpath here, having recently released the BlackBerry Curve 8330 earlier this week, only to follow up that move by announcing the availability of the Moto Q9c on its online store as well as all Verizon Wireless business sales channels from today (May 9) onwards. For those who have been lusting after this smartphone, you can pick it up from any Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, including those in Circuit City, within the coming weeks as shipments start to arrive. This smartphone targets business professionals and boasts some pretty powerful capabilities, including access to over 14 million points of interest thanks to Verizon Wireless’ very own popular VZ Navigator service. Other specifications can be found after the jump.

  • Windows Mobile 6 Standard - access to POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail accounts
  • Documents To Go - read, edit and create Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents
  • Full QWERTY keyboard with dedicated “hot keys” for shortcuts to popular applications
  • 2.4″ color screen with innovative adaptive technology to adjust for optimized brightness for indoor and outdoor lighting to maximize battery power
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with flash and fixed focus, plus video capture and playback
  • 128 MB of on-board memory and optional removable memory future-proofed up to 32 GB (sold separately)
  • Voice-activated dialing
  • Smart contacts dialing
  • Speakerphone
  • Stereo Bluetooth wireless technology supporting both Bluetooth A2DP and AVRCP profiles

I must say that I am pretty disappointed with the 1.3 megapixel camera. Granted, this is not meant to be a performance handset of any sorts, and for a business phone to have a camera, it can be considered a bonus, but surely Motorola could do better than a mere 1.3 megapixels, right? Isn’t 2 the norm these days, not to mention 3.2 megapixels slowly but surely being the mainstay soon? If you’re interested in picking up the Moto Q9c, it will cost you $249.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement.

Green House EXC-ESA2

Green House has just released its GH-EXC-ESA2 card that increases the connectivity of your notebook. It will feature a couple of 3.0Gbps eSATA slots, a JBOD external drive, and support for RAID 0/1. Not only will it come in the older PCMCIA Type II model, there will also be a PCI Express version. Both devices have been certified to run on both Windows XP and Vista, so Mac owners are out of the loop yet again. Bummer! No idea on how much this costs, nor whether it will be available outside of Japan or not.

Fool burglars with a realistic security camera with working LEDs

If you own a small business or just have a lot of valuables in your home, you’ve probably considered purchasing a couple of security cameras. Unfortunately such things cost money, and thus aren’t always an option. If you’re only mildly concerned that people are going to try and break into your place, why not get a couple of dummy cameras instead?

Sure, you don’t have the comfort of knowing that you’ll catch thieves on tape should they break into your house or business, but that’s not really the point of having a fake camera. There’s a good chance that if the dummy cam is placed in a very conspicuous area and looks good enough, anyone looking to break in would just move along to the next house.

This Dummy IR LED Bullet Camera certainly looks real enough to make just about anyone think they’re being watched. They’ve added in LEDs which are activated by a photocell, which would be enough for me to believe it’s real. The cameras are far cheaper than the real things at $34.99. Then again if someone figures out your ruse, you’ll wish you had gotten live cameras.
